Editorial Policy
Our Commitment to Accuracy
Finance content carries real responsibility. Inaccurate information about taxes, credit scores, or mortgage rates can lead to poor financial decisions. That’s why we hold ourselves to strict editorial standards.
How We Research Content
Every article published on UK Money Explained is researched using authoritative, primary sources. Our key reference sources include:
- gov.uk — The UK Government’s official website for tax rates, thresholds, benefits, and regulatory information
- Office for National Statistics (ONS) — For national averages, household spending data, and economic indicators
- Bank of England — For base rate information, monetary policy, and financial stability data
- Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) — For consumer protection regulations, lending rules, and financial product standards
- Ofgem — For energy price caps, average bills, and utilities regulation
- Ofwat — For water industry data and average bill information
We do not rely on secondary sources where primary data is available. When we cite statistics, we link to or reference the original source.
How Content Is Written
Our content follows a structured process:
- Topic research — We identify the key questions people ask about a topic and gather data from primary sources.
- Outline creation — Every article follows a consistent template: Quick Answer, Explanation, How It Works, Example Calculation, Reference Tables, and FAQs.
- Writing — Content is written in plain English, targeting a reading age of 13-14 (the recommended level for public information). We avoid jargon and explain any technical terms.
- Fact-checking — All figures, rates, thresholds, and percentages are verified against primary sources before publication.
- Review — Content is reviewed for accuracy, clarity, and compliance with our editorial guidelines before publication.
What We Don’t Do
UK Money Explained is an educational resource. We explain how financial products and systems work. We do not:
- Provide personalised financial advice
- Recommend specific financial products
- Endorse or promote any financial institution
- Accept payment for editorial content
For personal financial advice, we always recommend consulting a qualified financial adviser regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
How We Handle Updates
Financial information changes regularly — tax bands shift, energy caps are adjusted, interest rates move. We handle this through:
- Annual reviews — Articles covering tax bands, NI thresholds, energy prices, and interest rates are reviewed at the start of each tax year (April) and whenever significant changes occur.
- Change flags — When key figures change, we update the article and adjust the “Last Updated” date.
- Archived figures — Where helpful, we include previous years’ figures for comparison, clearly labelled.
Corrections Policy
If we make an error, we fix it promptly:
- Minor corrections (typos, formatting) are made without notice.
- Material corrections (incorrect figures, misleading statements) are corrected and noted at the top of the article.
If you spot an error in our content, please contact us so we can investigate and correct it as quickly as possible.
